Mobile Companies Losing Huge Revenue In India
After heading to Assam Violence, Indian government has banned bulk SMS'es and MMS's for 15 days in all states of India. Banning of bulk messages headed to people on 18th August. This action playing a major role to stop circulation of misleading information to people from northeast states. The ban came into force when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had aforementioned the unfold of rumors by miscreants had created panic among folks happiness to the northeast resulting in their exodus from places like metropolis and Pune among different areas. Limit of sending a message is set to five SMS per day.
You cannot send more than this limit of message and this number include MMS also. According to Telecom Operators, they are having loss of 7-8 percent of revenue they generate from SMS and MSS services.
According to General Director of Cellular Operators Association of India, Mr. Rajan S Mathews,
"A ban of several days means they could lose around 7 to 8 % of revenue this month from their SMS/MMS services"
He also mentioned that, about 15-18 percent revenue they generate for data services of which SMS is a part.
On this matter Subho Ray, president of Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) said,
“The government ought to commence with a law that has clarity. Provision a ban like this can be archaic and not uniform, considering the actual fact that SMS may be an important mode of communications in today’s world. We've appealed to DoT to allow a lot of clarity to the notifications, and permit emergency and important text electronic messaging services like those being sent by the railways, banks, airlines etc.”
Due to ban on SMS, young people having problem while contacting their friend. Almost all students in India via SMS as their primary source to connect with others as this is much cheaper and easy service. This is not first time the Indian government has banned SMS/MMS services on Festivals time.
Earlier, some political parties apprenticed the government to shut down amusing some social networking sites, such as Twitter and Facebook, for a few canicule to anticipate the advance of rumors. But this footfall is not taken.
The government has said those who are overextension rumors and ambiguous information online and through SMS will be punished for this kind of work.
